Your glove size

16 oz

Heavier fighters need 16 oz on the bag. More padding for harder punches, and the extra weight builds the shoulders you will spar with later.

HOW BOXING GLOVE SIZING WORKS

Boxing gloves are sized by weight in ounces, not by hand size like a baseball glove. The ounce number tells you how much padding is in the glove. More ounces means more padding between your knuckles and whatever you hit.

That is why bigger fighters use bigger gloves: heavier punches need more padding to keep hands safe and partners healthy. Sparring gloves run bigger than bag gloves for the same reason. The padding protects the person getting hit, which is why gyms are strict about 16 oz for sparring.

Fit still matters. Try gloves on with your hand wraps on, because wraps take up space. The glove should feel snug with no pinching, your fingers should reach comfortably, and the wrist strap should lock your wrist solid. If you are between sizes, go up: a glove that is slightly roomy with wraps beats a glove that crushes your knuckles.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What does oz mean on boxing gloves?

Oz stands for ounce, and it measures the glove's weight, which is really a measure of padding. A 16 oz glove has more padding than a 12 oz glove. That is why heavier people and sparring use bigger ounce gloves.

Can I spar in 12 oz gloves?

Most gyms will not allow it. The standard for sparring is 16 oz because the extra padding protects your partner. Show up with 12 oz gloves and your coach will hand you a loaner pair.

Do heavier boxing gloves hit harder?

No, the opposite. More padding means a softer impact on the target. Heavier gloves are useful because they protect hands and build shoulder endurance, not because they add power.

What size boxing gloves for a woman beginner?

Go by body weight, same as everyone else. Most women beginners land on 12 oz for bag and pad work, or 14 oz if they are over 120 pounds. For sparring, use whatever your gym requires, usually 14 or 16 oz.

How do I know if my boxing gloves fit right?

Try them on with hand wraps on. They should feel snug with no pinching or numbness, your fingers should reach the end comfortably, and the wrist strap should hold your wrist firm. Between sizes, go up.
